The Coven: Fire and Ice by Verdell Walker Review!

The Coven: Fire and Ice (Volume 1) - Verdell Walker

Kat is the queen bee at her school. She is the typical rich girl and has everything. Her clique though, bully people and Kat does nothing to stop it. When the bullying turns deadly Kat knows she has to turn her life around. She flies out to live with her mother and to get away from all the memories of her old life. She starts the new school and befriends Bronwyn. At lunch Bronwyn takes Kat to a trendy restaurant, while there a group of boys walk in. They are all tall, athletic and gorgeous, but Kat finds her eyes drawn to one boy in particular.

Blaze is the son of the First. He is a particularly strong Warlock and leads The Brotherhood. The Brotherhood consists of Etienne, Sebastian, Quintavius and Cody. All of them are strong warlocks and committed to fighting the evil that is Seth and The Dark Ones. When he first sees Kat she ends up in the middle of a fight and gets hurt. He has to wipe her memory and pretend they never met. He knows its dangerous to get involved with her because she isn't a witch but he is drawn to her.

The author approached me to review The Coven, and whilst I'd never heard of it after reading the blurb I jumped at the chance. I love witchy books and this sounded really good, well I'm glad to say it was so so good.

I loved Kat. She totally transforms from the mean girl to a girl you really want as a friend. She is really sorry for what happened at her old school and vows to never let anything like that happen again. She stands up to the Clique and defends her friends now. She is strong, capable, kind and brave.Even though she isn't a witch she is still kick ass and wont go down without a fight.

Blaze and the rest of the boys are awesome. They are all athletic and gorgeous but down to earth. Blaze has never known anyone like Kat and instantly falls for her strength and beauty. Even though its dangerous to date her he cant help but try. I loved how their relationship progressed. Blaze is the type of boy every girl dreams about!!

The romance was well handled. Blazed is used to girls falling at his feet but Kat isn't one of them. She used to date boys just like Blaze and thinks he is nothing but a dumb jock. Its not till she sees how nice and kind he is that she starts falling for him.

I also loved the camaraderie between all the boys. They joke and mess around but they are like brothers and each would die for each other.

The story is well written and with lots of character development. There is a ton of magic throughout the book and its fast paced and action packed. Verdell Walker can sure write swoon worthy boys and awesome fight scenes!! I was engrossed from beginning to end and cant wait for book 2.

Pawn (The Blackcoat Rebellion, #1) by Aimee Carter Review!

Pawn - Aimee Carter

Kitty Doe is an Extra. Her parents already had one child and then had her. She lives in a group home now. She knows if she doesn't do well in her test she faces a life of hard work and little pay.

The day of her test comes and Kitty is classed as a III. She is devastated. For the life she wants she would have to be a IV and above. After the test when she is in the market, Kitty steals an orange. If she is caught she gets a harsh punishment. She meets up with Benji (her boyfriend) and on their way out they are stopped by a guard. She runs!

Back at the group home she thinks she is safe but when a knock comes she hides. The guard from the market has come for her. When they leave she knows there is only one choice for her and finds work with her friend. That night a Hart (The most prominent family there) comes to her and offers her a chance to become a VII. She jumps at the chance but is it what it seems?? What is the cost of becoming a VII?

OK, I loved this book!! Aimee Carter has created a world that is different, bleak and unique. The people are tested and ranked based on their scores, the higher the rank the better the job. If you cant contribute to society, you are sent Elsewhere. When Kitty is ranked a III, her job is sewer maintenance in a different city. She doesn't want to leave Benji, hence why she goes along with the VII idea.

I loved Kitty, she is witty, brave and a strong willed character. When she realises the cost of her VII she knows she has to go along with what they want or she will die, but she doesn't do things the way the Harts want. I connected with her immediately and was rooting for her the whole way through.

As for Benji!! He was awesome. SO sweet, kind, strong and brave. He adores Kitty and will do anything she wants. He asks her to run away with him but she didn't want to ruin his life so said no. Here is a swoon worthy quote from him!
..."Even if we'd never met, even if you never existed, I would still love you beyond all reason for the rest of my life"....
See!!! Totally swoon worthy ;)

The whole book was full of suspense, heartache, twists and turns. The Harts are heartless. I wouldn't like to be apart of their family. All the backstabbing, lying, murder attempts was just mind bending!! The story was fast paced, intense, heartbreaking, thrilling and intriguing. I cant wait to see what the author has in store for the characters, based on this book it isn't going to be easy. Pawn ended on a cliff hanger so I'm dying to see what happens.

The Hunt (The Hunt, #1) by Andrew Fukuda review!

The Hunt - Andrew Fukuda

In a world where vampires have eaten the humans to near extinction, what would you do to survive?

Humans, or as the vamps refer to them "Hepers", are an endangered species. The Vampires rule and have some Hepers in glass domes. The domes come up at sundown and retract at sunup. It keeps the Hepers safe until needed.

Every few years the vampires have "The Hunt", where they get to hunt the Hepers. Every vamp is given a number and a lottery system is used to pick the lucky person. This is the first hunt in 10 years so the vamps are riled up. On the day of the lottery Gene prays he wont win, (He is a human masquerading as a vamp) but when his number is called he knows his secret might be revealed.

Ever since he was small his father drilled The Rules into him. For him to survive he has to replicate what the vamps do. He has to be careful and not draw attention to himself. He knows that one small mistake will be his death. When he wins the lottery, he is immediately taken from the school and whisked to the academy to get trained for the hunt. He doesn't even get a chance to stop at his house and get his "supplies". How will he survive in such close quarters with the vamps without the stuff he needs? What will he do the day of The Hunt?

I went into The Hunt with no expectations. All I knew was it had Vampires in it. Well Andrew Fukuda has created a unique, scary and horrible world. The vamps aren't the cuddly kind. They are blood thirsty and horrible. They don't just suck blood, they devour every part of the humans. They drool (alot), the click their bones, they scratch their wrists when happy!! The way the author describes them makes you afraid of them from the beginning. There no humanity left in them!!

I liked Gene. He has the vamps way of life down. He knows he cant get involved in anything strenuous because he isn't as strong or as fast as them, also it would make him sweat, which is a big nono!! He cant show emotion nor sneeze, cough or do anything remotely human. He knows though that he can never forget who he is!! Every day is a struggle to survive and one tiny mistake will get him eaten.

There were times during the book where you think he will be discovered and your heart is in your mouth but overall The Hunt was very slow. Most of the book is just plodding along up till near the end, which is a heart pounding, edge of your seat ride!!! Its a unique world and the author painted it in such a way where you say, no way would I like to be part of it!! I cant wait to dive into book 2 to see where Genes story will take us.

3:59 by Gretchen McNeil Review!

3:59 - Gretchen McNeil

Josie life in the last 6 months has gone from bad to worse. Her parents are getting divorced, she lost her job, her boyfriend off a year cheated on her with her best friend and she has become the source of all the whispers in the school. Her mother is acting strange and seems fixated on her work and a mirror. She sends Josie to go get the mirror from her father. On the way home Josie stops at the railroad to leave a train pass. Suddenly a bright flash happens and Josie blacks out for a few minutes.

From then on Josie is having weird dreams at the same time every day. She dreams about her life, but not her life. In the dreams Jo is her exact same but different. Her life seems perfect. She is and has everything Josie wants. But its all a dream, or is it!!!!

OK, 3:59 was not what I expected at all. I knew basically what the book was about but I hadn't read any reviews or dug too deep into the book. Well I'm so glad to say I loved this!!!

I was hesitant to start this because parallel universe books can be confusing and hard to understand if done wrong. In no way did I feel 3:59 was like this. Gretchen McNeil explained everything in a way that you understand without being condescending.

You would think with 2 sets of each character it would be confusing but it wasn't. I loved Josie. She is nice, smart and a good person. I loved the fact she was a science whizz. We need more super smart heroines!!! She just wants to try and right things with Nick, so when she sees Jo she hopes things will be better. Jo is like the polar opposite of Josie and is everything Josie wants to be but is she what she seems??

Nick in the parallel universe was my favourite. He was strong, smart, kind and loyal. The author did an amazing job differentiating between both sets of universes. It could of gotten confusing but while the characters are so similar, they are somehow completely different.

3:59 is everything you want in a good suspenseful read. The plot was unique and different. Its fast paced and grabs the attention of the reader. I loved all the characters and there were tons of twists and turns thrown in throughout the book. As for that ending, its heartbreaking but in a way I'm glad it ended like that.

Relic (The Books of Eva I) by Heather Terrell Review.

Relic: The Books of Eva 1 - Heather Terrell

In New North everyone follows The Lex. After the floods wiped out the rest of the world, apart from The Chosen, everyone in New North is bound to The Lex and its rules. Anyone found breaking them is harshly punished.

Eva knows The Lex inside out. She is a Maiden and her dad is Chief Archon. When her twin is killed in a climbing "accident", Eva decides to take his place in The Testing! The Testing is something all men take part in when they reach 18 to become an Archon. There is no rule per se that a woman cant take part but no woman has ever done it. Eva is the first.

The Testers have to travel through barren icy places to reach their goal. They are to get no help from anyone, nor can they even talk to each other. If they get there, they have to climb down a cliff and dig out Relics.

Relics are things from Before. The New Northers history tells them that the people before worshiped a false god named "Apple". They used false remedies like "Tylenol" and "Coke". The better the Relic the more chance the Tester has to win. If someone is lucky enough to find the False God "Apple"s alter then they usually win. Eva doesn't find that but what she does find is something that will change her view of everything.

This book was awesome!!! I really enjoyed it. The whole concept of the False God Apple and what the people were told to believe was so unique and different. They believe that everyone prayed to this false god through the "altar" (laptop or tablet) They believe that the floods were sent to wipe out these people because they worship a false god and are too reliant on their false remedies.

Eva was a character I immediately liked. She may be a Maiden but she questions what is true. She does the Testing knowing its a perilous journey. Even when Jasper ,whom her parents have deemed her betrothed, tells her he loves her she still goes through with The Testing and keeps focused on what has to be done. She does it to honour her brother. When Lucas, Evas friend, hands Eva her brothers journal she finds surprising stuff in there. Is everything as it seems in New North? What and who should Eva believe?

Overall Relic was fast paced and well written. I loved the concept and found myself devouring it. The world Heather Terrell has created is unique and I cant wait to jump back in when book 2 comes out.

One thing I will say is that I've seen this compared to The Hunger Games and I've seen reviews slating this book because when they went into it they were thinking in terms of The Hunger Games. This is nothing like THG!!! Relic should be enjoyed for what it is, a great story, and not compared to any book. Every story is different and should be enjoyed for its own merits!

Wind and Shadow (The Talbot Trilogy #1) by Tori L. Ridgewood Review

Wind and Shadow: The Talbot Series, Book 1 - Tori L. Ridgewood

Rayvin Woods never thought she would have to come back to the place of her childhood. She left Talbot in a hurry after being accused but acquitted of attempted murder. Now after some harrowing circumstances she has no choice but to return to a place she knows she wont be welcomed.

Grant Michaels is the best friend of the person Rayvin was accused of hurting. He is an officer now and a pillar of the community. He has always pined for Rayvin since high school. Even though he knows he should hate her, he finds himself drawn to her.

Malcolm de Sade had been imprisoned but finally has escaped. He is fixated on a certain girl but wants Rayvin to be his as well. He has a plan that involves her and will do anything to get his way. He is handsome (when he wants to be), blood thirsty and evil but still Rayvin feels drawn to him.

The second Rayvin comes back to Talbot things start happening. Between sink holes, animals dying and people missing, the town of Talbot suspect Rayvin. She has always been different and they call her witch. Rayvin knows the truth and must fight to keep her loved ones safe.

Ok, I went into this not knowing anything about this. The author approached me to review it and once I saw it was about witches I jumped at the chance. I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it.

The plot is fast paced. Once Rayvin gets to Talbot things keep happening. There's was times when I was reading it that I couldn't put it down because I had to see what happened.

Rayvin was an awesome character. Strong, sure and capable, she is well able to look after herself. She knows not alot of people will welcome her back but keeps her chin up because she knows what really happened that night. She has had a hard time since she left but she hasn't let it affect her. She is proud to be a witch.

Grant was my favourite. He is strong, handsome, kind and someone you want on your side. He has liked Rayvin since high school and has many a dream about her. The sexual chemistry between him and Rayvin was Hawt!!!! Both feel the pull and both fantasize about each other but will they do anything about it??

Overall I really liked Wind and Shadow. Its a strong start to the trilogy. It was fast paced and well written. The author wasn't afraid to play with our emotions. At times I was reading it and going NOO that cant happen, but it does!! I loved that the author took the risk and did things to certain characters that wasn't expected. It paid off. I will definitely check out book 2 to see what happens.

Recommend for 18+ because of language and sexual situations.

Darkness Before Dawn (Darkness Before Dawn Trilogy #1) by J.A. London Review

Darkness Before Dawn - J.A. London

When Vampires revealed themselves to humans it started a 30 year war for supremacy. The war ended and the VampHu treaty was signed. Humans have to donate blood to Vampires and Vampires will stay out of the cities. The Humans built a wall and nobody except the delegate is allowed outside.

Dawn is only young when her parents are killed. They were the Vampire delegates to Lord Valentine. Now the job falls to Dawn to become the new delegate.

Tegan, Dawns best friend, decides one night to go to a party near The Wall. Dawn has reservations about being out so late and being so near The Wall. They go and Teagan meets some boys, unfortunately those boys spike Teagans drink and Dawn is left trying to get an unconscious Tegan home. She hops on to the train but gets attacked by Vampires. She fights as best she can and suddenly hears fighting elsewhere. She hopes its the Night Watchmen. When the last Vamp is killed she looks up to find an extremely handsome man, Victor. He helps her and Teagan get home safe.

On her first solo trip outside the wall to Lord Valentines mansion she is a bundle of nerves but knows she has to contain all emotion and give nothing away but that's very hard to do when once she gets there she meets a very familiar man!

I went into this not expecting too much because Id read a few negative reviews but I have to say I really enjoyed it. I loved the Dystopian/ Post Apocalyptic feel to Darkness Before Dawn. It was refreshing to read a Vampire book that brought back the love of Vampire books!!!

I loved Dawn. She is strong, brave and capable. She went through so much with losing her parents and then losing her brother to vampires that she has a strong dislike for them. She thinks as them as monsters, only out for blood and care nothing about anyone else. Her opinion is changed when she meets a certain someone though.

Michael, Dawns boyfriend annoyed me a bit. He is all like 'Me Tarzan'!! He constantly has to be reassured and praised that he can protect Dawn even though she is kick ass herself. He is training to be a night watchman and his attitude is like he is the only one able to take care of things. He needs to lose the ego!

I loved Victor. The knight in shining armour!! From the start I loved him. He is brave and good and kind. I was so rooting for him and cant wait to read more in the next books.

I had to take off a star simply because of the dreaded love triangle. I hate them!!! Even though this book had one it was complex. Michael was her friend since childhood and then it developed into something. She is comfortable with him but when she meets Victor, sparks fly. Its different, forbidden and new.

So ya, overall Darkness Before Dawn was awesome. It added a new element to the Vampire Genre with the Thirst! It had enough action and suspense to keep me reading. I will say I kind of was able to guess the big reveal but there was still enough twists that it didn't get old. Im really looking forward to reading book 2, especially after the cliffhanger ending.

Blood-Kissed Sky (Darkness Before Dawn Trilogy #2) by J.A. London Review

Blood-Kissed Sky - J.A. London

After the deadly ending of Darkness Before Dawn we see Dawn in hospital, the citizens of Denver are panicking and not donating blood and Sin is gone for the time been. When Dawn is released she realises the extent of damage the events at the Teen Initiative Party had. Its now being called Hell Night. A lot of kids lost their lives and more are missing. People are blaming Dawn and have no faith in her anymore.

Very few in Denver are donating blood and Dawn knows that if they don't The Thirst will set in. While the Day Walkers are a threat Dawn and Clive think The Thirst is more of a threat and Clive decides to send Dawn to LA to figure how they manage The Thirst and why they are Vampire free. She is also trying to find out any information on Sin because he said he came from there.

She cant tell anyone she is going but she tells Teagan anyway. She is assigned a Night Watchman to be her bodyguard and Ian Hightower, the famous Vampire Hunter, will also be on board the Night Train. On the train she comes face to face with Teagan, who decides to stow away on board to help Dawn. She also faces the fact that her bodyguard is no other than Michael.

She hates the idea of her friends being in danger but has no other choice but to go forward. Along with Ian, the three friends go to LA to get answers but while there they find way more than they bargained for!!

Whoa, this book was so good. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. From the reviews its the kinda book you either love or hate. Im glad to say I loved it!!

Dawn is as awesome as always. She is brave to a fault and always looks out for her friends. She is upset with the idea of her friends being in danger and tells Michael to protect Teagan over her. I really like her strength and determination.

Teagan is so messed up after the events of Hell Night. She isn't sleeping and when she does she has nightmares. She is so jumpy but still goes with Dawn to help her and to try to kill Sin. She seems to have grown more as a character since the last book.

Michael was much better in this book as well. He isn't so egotistical. He is a Night Watchman now and knows the protecting people and protecting Dawn is the most important thing. He knows about The Thirst first hand and knows how this mission is very important.

We don't see too much of Victor in this but what we do see left me guessing what way he will be in book 3. The little bit of blood he gets he has to ration carefully among his vamps but he knows he doesn't have enough to satisfy them. If they don't get more blood he knows the vamps will either attack the people or each other.

Sin on the other hand is one of the creepiest, baddest, craziest vampire baddies I've read in a long time. He is totally cuckoo. I cant wait to see what happens next with him. He is one sick twisted dude!!

Overall I loved Blood Kissed Sky, even though Id figured out the twist it didn't detract from the story. With plenty of action, adventure, suspense and vampires its well worth the read. I'm so glad I have book 3 to jump into straight away because I cant wait to see what happens.
