I'm a mother and wife but mainly a bookaholic. I read mostly Dystopian, Post Apocalyptic, Urban Fantasy, Fantasy and anything Paranormal.

After Daybreak (Darkness Before Dawn Trilogy #3) by J.A. London Review

After Daybreak - J.A. London

Hmmmm, Im verging on a 3.5 stars but I'm still unsure!!

This is book 3 of the series and there may be spoilers for previous books!

Dawn and Michael escape Sin and finally get back to Denver to tell them Sins plan. They are shocked with what happened in LA but have their own worries. Denver is being attacked all the time by Day Walkers. They need to figure out how they are getting in and stop them.

Dawn has to face the Vamp council to try and get them to help in the coming war and prepare them for whats going to happen. She knows her heritage may put her in danger but sees no other option. She must embrace who and what she is in order to get help. Who will win the war??

Im a bit disappointed with After Daybreak to be honest.

After all that happened in the last 2 books and all the gearing up for the war, then to not happen?? I felt a little cheated. I was reading this and waiting and waiting for the coming battle and it never came!!!

(show spoiler)

I really enjoyed it other wise but hated the ending. It was way too safe!!

In the final installment things wrapped up OK albeit a bit boringly safe. I ended up really liking Michael and Teagan. They grew so much from annoying characters to great friends of Dawns. I'm glad they had a happy ending. I really liked Ian and Id love to see a short story about him and his life!! Victor is as awesome as always. He is a worthy hero and I love his relationship with Dawn.

Whilst there was one or two surprises I found After Daybreak to be less exciting then I thought. There was plenty of awesome fight scenes but I wanted more from this. I wanted heartache. I wanted to be on the edge of my seat. I wanted to see more of Sin and his transformation. He was an intriguing bad guy and I would of loved to see a bit more of him in this but sadly it didn't happen.

Overall Id still recommend this series to people, it reminded me why I love Vampire books and added that bit extra with The Thirst aspect.

Curse of the Broomstaff - Tyler Whitesides When I started this series with my kids their first thought was how can a book about janitors that takes place in a school be good? I had to laugh at their reasoning. Well we have read all 3 and that says alot. They really enjoyed each and every one.

My boys loved that this book was action packed. We see some new characters in Curse Of The Broomstaff and new weapons. Who wouldn't love a spray that turns things to glass!! Who would of thought a book with so much trash in it would be so good!!

Both Spencer and Daisy grow as characters and my boys loved that they were so involved in trying to win the war against the BEM. The kids along with their little band of helpers have new challenges and creatures to fight. I loved the fact that the main idea of the war was that the BEM were trying to stop kids learning but the kids were fighting to stop them. It sent a strong message that learning is good.

While the books are for kids I still enjoyed them. My boys have recommended them to their friends and say that the books have plenty of magic, action, adventure, twists and turns and fight scenes. The books were faced paced and kept my kids interested and wanting more. To me that's what makes a great read for kids. Id recommend to any parent whose child loves books.

The Waking Dreamer - J.E. Alexander

This is a DNF for me!!!

The Waking Dreamer - J.E. Alexander Im going to mark this as a DNF.
Blood-Kissed Sky - J.A. London After the deadly ending of Darkness Before Dawn we see Dawn in hospital, the citizens of Denver are panicking and not donating blood and Sin is gone for the time been. When Dawn is released she realises the extent of damage the events at the Teen Initiative Party had. Its now being called Hell Night. A lot of kids lost their lives and more are missing. People are blaming Dawn and have no faith in her anymore.

Very few in Denver are donating blood and Dawn knows that if they don't The Thirst will set in. While the Day Walkers are a threat Dawn and Clive think The Thirst is more of a threat and Clive decides to send Dawn to LA to figure how they manage The Thirst and why they are Vampire free. She is also trying to find out any information on Sin because he said he came from there.

She cant tell anyone she is going but she tells Teagan anyway. She is assigned a Night Watchman to be her bodyguard and Ian Hightower, the famous Vampire Hunter, will also be on board the Night Train. On the train she comes face to face with Teagan, who decides to stow away on board to help Dawn. She also faces the fact that her bodyguard is no other than Michael.

She hates the idea of her friends being in danger but has no other choice but to go forward. Along with Ian, the three friends go to LA to get answers but while there they find way more than they bargained for!!

Whoa, this book was so good. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. From the reviews its the kinda book you either love or hate. Im glad to say I loved it!!

Dawn is as awesome as always. She is brave to a fault and always looks out for her friends. She is upset with the idea of her friends being in danger and tells Michael to protect Teagan over her. I really like her strength and determination.

Teagan is so messed up after the events of Hell Night. She isn't sleeping and when she does she has nightmares. She is so jumpy but still goes with Dawn to help her and to try to kill Sin. She seems to have grown more as a character since the last book.

Michael was much better in this book as well. He isn't so egotistical. He is a Night Watchman now and knows the protecting people and protecting Dawn is the most important thing. He knows about The Thirst first hand and knows how this mission is very important.

We don't see too much of Victor in this but what we do see left me guessing what way he will be in book 3. The little bit of blood he gets he has to ration carefully among his vamps but he knows he doesn't have enough to satisfy them. If they don't get more blood he knows the vamps will either attack the people or each other.

Sin on the other hand is one of the creepiest, baddest, craziest vampire baddies I've read in a long time. He is totally cuckoo. I cant wait to see what happens next with him. He is one sick twisted dude!!

Overall I loved Blood Kissed Sky, even though Id figured out the twist it didn't detract from the story. With plenty of action, adventure, suspense and vampires its well worth the read. I'm so glad I have book 3 to jump into straight away because I cant wait to see what happens.
Roomies - Sara Zarr, Tara Altebrando Review closer to release date.

Cold Blooded (Jessica McClain #3) by Amanda Carlson Review.

This is book 3 so there may be spoilers from the other 2. Ive tried to keep it spoiler free but I may unintentionally reveal something!

Cold Blooded can be summed up in one word, Ah-Freakin-Mazing!!!! After the ending of book 2 I couldn't wait to read this. It has fast become one of my favourite series.

This book starts with a bang, literally!!! The sorcerers have created an orb that can track Jessicas signature. It finds her and she is lucky to escape with her life. The witches take her to their compound and while there Jessica learns that her father is in terrible danger and if she doesnt get to him soon he will die. She also learns that Ray is her fathers only hope. The witches give her a spelled car that will mask her as long as she is inside. Both herself and Rourke have to go to the cabin in the woods to meet up with Naomi and Ray. Ray has made the transition but he is different than any other Vampire. Jessica convinces him to go with her and try and save her dad. She makes it to the Vamp Queens compound and what follows is an insane roller-coaster ride!!

Every book in this series so far seems to be getting better and better. When I was reading this I was in a constant state of nervousness and tenseness!! I wanted to devour it but with kids I had to be content with reading whenever I could.

Jessica is as kick ass as ever and she is still one of my all time favourite characters. She is snarky, tough but so fair with the other supernaturals. I was so glad to see more of her and Rourke together in this. They needed the "me" time to cement their bond and build their relationship.

We finally find out what kind of cat Rourke is and its awesome!! He is so powerful and his love for Jessica shines through. His mate bond makes him try his hardest to protect Jessica but he knows that that is useless, she is well able to look after herself and she is in constant peril. Poor Jessica never gets a break!!!

I loved the fact that most of the sects are intermingling and falling for different species, wolf and cat, wolf and witch and is there a wolf and vamp gonna happen???

I love Ray. He is such a pain in the ass but is also so brave and true. Him and Jessica get so snarky with each other but you can tell he will do anything to protect people. He is a true cop at heart. His journey is interesting and intriguing. I've never read of anything like him before and look forward to seeing him in the next book.

Amanda Carlson can sure write a book. She threw in new elements that I loved, like what The Vamp Queen is, Ray and the feral wolves. She is now on my automatic buy list!!!

So yay, overall, this book rocked!! Its an action packed, edge of your seat, nail biter book!! It has every supernatural being, sorcerers, demons, vampires, witches and wolves. It even has witches with spelled guns. The only down side is I have to wait till next year for the next one!!!

Darkness Before Dawn - J.A. London When Vampires revealed themselves to humans it started a 30 year war for supremacy. The war ended and the VampHu treaty was signed. Humans have to donate blood to Vampires and Vampires will stay out of the cities. The Humans built a wall and nobody except the delegate is allowed outside.

Dawn is only young when her parents are killed. They were the Vampire delegates to Lord Valentine. Now the job falls to Dawn to become the new delegate.

Tegan, Dawns best friend, decides one night to go to a party near The Wall. Dawn has reservations about being out so late and being so near The Wall. They go and Teagan meets some boys, unfortunately those boys spike Teagans drink and Dawn is left trying to get an unconscious Tegan home. She hops on to the train but gets attacked by Vampires. She fights as best she can and suddenly hears fighting elsewhere. She hopes its the Night Watchmen. When the last Vamp is killed she looks up to find an extremely handsome man, Victor. He helps her and Teagan get home safe.

On her first solo trip outside the wall to Lord Valentines mansion she is a bundle of nerves but knows she has to contain all emotion and give nothing away but that's very hard to do when once she gets there she meets a very familiar man!

I went into this not expecting too much because Id read a few negative reviews but I have to say I really enjoyed it. I loved the Dystopian/ Post Apocalyptic feel to Darkness Before Dawn. It was refreshing to read a Vampire book that brought back the love of Vampire books!!!

I loved Dawn. She is strong, brave and capable. She went through so much with losing her parents and then losing her brother to vampires that she has a strong dislike for them. She thinks as them as monsters, only out for blood and care nothing about anyone else. Her opinion is changed when she meets a certain someone though.

Michael, Dawns boyfriend annoyed me a bit. He is all like 'Me Tarzan'!! He constantly has to be reassured and praised that he can protect Dawn even though she is kick ass herself. He is training to be a night watchman and his attitude is like he is the only one able to take care of things. He needs to lose the ego!

I loved Victor. The knight in shining armour!! From the start I loved him. He is brave and good and kind. I was so rooting for him and cant wait to read more in the next books.

I had to take off a star simply because of the dreaded love triangle. I hate them!!! Even though this book had one it was complex. Michael was her friend since childhood and then it developed into something. She is comfortable with him but when she meets Victor, sparks fly. Its different, forbidden and new.

So ya, overall Darkness Before Dawn was awesome. It added a new element to the Vampire Genre with the Thirst! It had enough action and suspense to keep me reading. I will say I kind of was able to guess the big reveal but there was still enough twists that it didn't get old. Im really looking forward to reading book 2, especially after the cliffhanger ending.

Aberrant - Ruth Silver 2.5 stars
Ever since I first heard of Aberrant and saw the cover I knew I wanted to read it. I adore Dystopian and Post Apocalyptic reads.
Im not rehashing what the books about because the synopsis explains it perfectly

[In the future Dystopian society of Cabal, the government instills equality for all and offers its citizens the perfect system. There is food, shelter and jobs for everyone. The one requirement is to follow the rules without question, including the government's match in marriage and "The Day of the Chosen", a lottery that randomly selects families to conceive children as natural means hasn't existed in generations. Following her eighteenth birthday, Olivia Parker accepts her requirement to marry her childhood best friend, Joshua Warren, and is eager to start her work assignment and new life when it all comes abruptly to an end as she's arrested and thrown in prison. The only crime committed, her existence. Olivia is unlike the rest of the world born not from "The Day of the Chosen." The truth haunts the government and puts her life in grave danger as one simple fact would destroy the perfect system.

With Joshua's help, Olivia breaks free of prison and is forced on the run. Together they set out to find the promised rebel town in search of a new home and new life together. Their situation seems less than promising as they reach the town of Haven. New rules and customs must be adhered to in order to stay. Leaving would mean most certain death in the large expanse of the Gravelands. Time is running out as the government mounts an attack to destroy Olivia and bury her secret with her. Thrown into a world unlike their own, they must quickly adapt to survive.]

I really really wanted to love this, the synopsis was awesome and I was looking forward to reading it but unfortunately it wasn't to be. The major reason I didn't like it was Olivia. To me she came across as so docile and tame and willing to do what everyone wanted. For example when Joshua breaks her out of prison she has no problem what so ever of leaving her mother behind!! Her mother tells her just once to leave without her and Olivia does with no argument.

Then when they get to the first town she is told she has to stay away from Joshua and, within the next 3 years, choose a husband to have a baby with. She is one second saying no way will she and then the next second saying she doesn't have a choice!!

The next town they go to they are made prisoners again and told that the next day they will be tested with the rest of the recruits and if they don't pass they will basically be killed. Not once did they try to demand answers or resist or even try to escape!!

Then they get injected with something and are suddenly able to hear each other thoughts and do you think they might of freaked out (I know I would) NO THEY DIDN'T.

Ugh I was reading it and wanted to grab both of them and say grow a backbone!!!

Also in the world the author created they have teleportation devices, are able to inject something into you to give you extra powers, immediately heal some wounds but they cant cure or find a cure for the infertility problem!!

Now I will say it wasn't all bad, if you can over look the above problems then the book is good. Its kind of like Divergent and Matched all rolled into one. Its faced past and has a great concept. The world building was what kept me reading and the author did have some fresh ideas. I enjoyed reading it but there was too much that annoyed me for me to give it a higher rating.

Charming (Pax Arcana, #1)

Charming (Pax Arcana, #1) - Elliott James 3.5 stars
Im not sure what to say about Charming. Parts I loved and parts I didn't.
John Charming was a Knight. He fought any supernatural creature that broke the Pax Arcana (a pact to make sure supernatural creatures kept the existence of themselves away from humans) He isn't like the other Knights though. He is part werewolf. He is now hunted by the same people he once was part of.
In the town he now lives in, a group of vampires are killing people and John knows if he doesn't do something soon the Knights will arrive.

I loved the fact that the book is told entirely from Johns POV. I've not read many books where we see the romance from an entirely male POV. I really liked seeing his relationship developing with Sig. I loved Johns character too. He is descendant from the Charming bloodline, is part werewolf and is snarky, wise cracking, and kickass. He is also brave, loyal and has awesome swords ;)

I liked Sig. She is definitely kickass and is well able to handle herself. The fact she is a Valkyrie was another aspect I loved. When she first sees John its kind of love at first sight but neither act on it because she is in a relationship already.

I loved the mix of myths and legends Charming had. From Knights Templar to Valkyries and Vampires to Werewolves, it was definitely a bonus. I loved the snarky tone of the book. I loved the amount of action it had and I loved the whole concept of it.

Now what I didn't like!!! The major factor for me was the information overload. For example. John could be fighting for his life but then the author stops and says "let me explain" and then goes off with TMI. It really annoyed me. I also didn't like Sigs boyfriend. He is a douche bag!!!

Overall I liked Charming. It was action packed with cool characters, snarky writing and a hero that's swoon worthy. The book has a great concept and I will definitely check out book 2 but I am hoping the author doesn't do anymore info dumping in future books.

A Sleep So Dark

A Sleep So Dark - Inara Scott Since the accident in which her mother died, Tandy suffers nightmares every night. Its gotten so bad that she tries everything not to fall asleep. As a last resort her father signs her up for an experimental sleep retreat where a doctor will monitor a group of teenagers for a week in a remote cabin. Four other teens are signed up, Bodie, Julian. Ione and Katelyn. Dr Gillman, along with his son Cade, takes them to the cabin to start treatment. Unfortunately things don't go as planned and someone ends up dead. The rest are trapped in the cabin because of a freak snow storm. Will any survive and what happens when the dreaming world and the real world collide!!

I went into A Sleep So Dark not knowing anything at all about it. There wasn't a blurb nor had I heard of it before. I've previously read other works by Inara Scott and really enjoyed it, so I jumped at the chance to read this. Well I loved it!!

I really liked Tandy. She tries her best to deal with the nightmares but they are getting so bad that she has no other choice but to go to the retreat even though the idea of staying in a remote cabin scares her. Its her last chance to save and fix herself. She finds herself attracted to Cade but he is very stand offish with her and I loved seeing their friendship progress. It wasn't a case of instant relationship, she had to work to get Cade to open up.

I loved Bodie straight away. He is the kind of friend that puts everyone at ease. He was awesome. He is snarky but has a vulnerable side and I was so sad when I read why he has nightmares and also when I read what happened to him!!

The story itself hooked me. The idea of the dream world being real was something I've never read before. I loved the word building and the atmosphere the author created with her words. It was definitely weird but wonderful.

The only thing that bothered me about the book the only other story we heard was Bodies. We didn't get to see why the rest were having nightmares. Also Cade story wasn't tied up so I'm hoping there's another book coming out!!

Overall I loved A Sleep So Dark. If you want a book that's shrouded in mystery, that's chock full of chills, thrills and suspense, then this book is for you. Its the perfect read for Halloween! Id highly recommend!!

Arrow of the Mist

Arrow of the Mist - Christina Mercer Lias father and a few others in her village have been struck down with a mysterious illness. They get pricked by some thorns and end up getting very sick. Her grandfather knows where the thorns come from, Brume! Its a place shrouded in fog and very few come out of there alive. Lia knows she has no choice but to venture into the unknown to save her father. She sets off with her grandfather, Wynn (her cousin)and Kelvin (her cousins friend)to find a cure but will they be on time?

I went into Arrows Of The Mist not having read too many reviews. I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised with it.
I really liked Lia, she is well able to look after herself and is brave and courageous. She has no problem going into an unknown place and facing what she has to do. She follows in her grandmothers footsteps and has a gift for plants and healing potions.

The little bit of romance in Arrows Of The Mist was really sweet. Lias love interest was evident from the start but I felt it could of been developed a bit further. We don't get to see alot of Kelvin and his relationship with Lia was basically non existent. I would of enjoyed it better if Kelvin went with Lia instead of Wynn.

Arrows Of The Mist was a quick read. The story progressed really quickly and was action packed but there wasn't much character development though which is why I gave it 4 stars.

Waterproof

Waterproof - Amber Garr When the author approached me and asked me to take part in the blog tour and review Waterproof I jumped at the chance. It sounded awesome! Well I'm so glad I did!!

Waterproof is told from both Zach and Vees POV. They are part of a group of deserters who are trying to survive in a world where water is scarce. They struggle to find any water and what they do find they usually have to steal. The first chapter of Waterproof jumps right into the action and we see Zach running for his life after stealing some water from other deserters. He escapes with a little bit of water but draws the deserters to their camp. They have to move camp and on their travels finds an abandoned place. They set up base but find themselves surrounded by mercenaries. Vee, Hunter and Max are captured and taken to the one place they tried to avoid in the first place, the factory. They have all heard the rumors about the place, that anyone who goes there doesn't come back. What Vee finds out there shocks her to the core!
Meanwhile Zach has to pose as a mercenary to gain access to the factory and try and save his friends.

I really enjoyed Waterproof. It was action packed and hooked me from the start. The first chapter sees Zach running for his life with a few precious bottles of water. This sets the tone for the entire book and not once was there a dull moment.
I loved Zach and Vee. Zach is so snarky and brave but also so foolish with his life at times. He tends to act first and think later. He draws the other deserters to the camp and has to deal with the consequences. I really liked Vee as well. She is kick ass, she carries and isn't afraid to use a sword!!! She does all she can for the group and will protect them with her life. She has known Zach since they were small and I loved how we saw their friendship progress.
I loved how even though this book is serious, we still had a few "snigger" moments! I was on the edge of my seat the whole way through but still managed a few laughs. For example ~ (This is from an ARC so is subject to change)

"A short, muscular man stepped out of the woods and blocked our path. His straggly hair and growing beard made him look like a dwarf. The stench put him more on par with a pile of manure."

Amber Garr has created a bleak and desolate world where water is scarce and people will do anything for it. It's a world that sucked me in and had me rooting for Zach and Vee. I loved it!! One thing I have to say though is O!M!G!!!! THAT ending!!!! When I read the ending I was like NOOOOOO, it cant end like that. Its a major cliffhanger and I so need book 2 like right now to see what happens!!!

Inhuman (Fetch, #1)

Inhuman (Fetch, #1) - Kat Falls When I heard of this I knew Id read it because it sounds so different.

Lane lives behind the wall. She has heard the tales of the East. She has heard about the Feral Zones and like everyone else, to her its just a story. She knows the history of why the wall was there but it still doesn't prepare her for whats outside.

The Fereae virus has decimated the world. It caused animals to go feral and turns people into savage animals, literally! The wall in the West was built, by the same company who created the virus, to keep out the ferals.

When Lane finds out that her father is a fetch (someone who illegally goes into the zones to fetch items and sell) and is now on the run from the government she is shocked. She is told that unless her father fetches a certain something he will be killed. She has no choice but to go into the heart of the feral zone to try and find him.

Ok, this book was awesome!! The idea that the people are actually turning into different animals is so unique. Also the virus is mutating people into different mixtures of animals. When lane sees her first Manimal she is shocked. She knows now that the "fariytales" her father told her every night are true and he was secretly preparing her in case she ever had to go there. She sees people with tails and fur and different animal parts on them.

I loved Lane. Her character starts out so afraid of dirt and infection that she has hand sanitizer on hand at all times but soon realises that that's the least of her worries. Her father made her take all kind of survival classes when she was growing up and she is so thankful for them but will they really help her survive, especially when she is up against cunning, vicious animals.

Everson and Rafe were another thing I loved. Everson is a soldier who patrols the border between the Wall and the Feral Zone. He finds Lane trying to cross and instead of turning her in he tries to help. Rafe is at the total opposite of Everson, he is rough and wild and grew up in the zone. Everyday for him is a struggle to survive. He is hunting a vicious rogue Manimal, that is ripping out the hearts of his victims, when he comes across Lane. He knows he father so decides to help her locate him.

What follows is an action packed, fight for survival, fast paced book. The world Kat Falls has created is unique and dangerous. I love the concept of the people being bitten and turning into mishmash animals. The author draws you in with her descriptive writing. It had plenty of twists and enough mystery to keep me satisfied. When I read the ending though I was so sad but hopeful they can fix it. I definitely cant wait for book 2 to see where the author will take it.
